RegMed Daily, Closing Bell, 1/27/12, Verastem heralds IPO, weekly gains slide away with disappointing economic gains but NASDAQ up
End of Day, Cause and Effect …
EOD Commentary: The Dow and S&P continued to … drift lower … Friday as investors hesitated to stay … long ahead of a weekend … and following a handful of tepid earnings and economic reports in addition to ongoing jitters in the euro zone. The S&P 500 also turned lower, while the NASDAQ struggled to hold gains. The CBOE Volatility Index <widely considered the best gauge of fear in the market> traded above 18.
What we’re witnessing is a market that’s just taking a breather and profits … there’s a factor of seasonality moving into the markets … February tends to be a month in which we see some <M&A> and I think this is a market that’s had a … very good run so you’re going to see even …more profit taking.
Closing Bell: The NASDAQ closed UP +11.27 (+0.4%) to 2,816.55. The Dow closed DOWN -73.41 (-0.58%) to 12,661.22.
