If and When, ESC Legislation-Don’t Hold Your Breath

On 8/31/10, Democratic Representative Diana DeGette of Colorado congressional district  said she would push to revive legislation specifically allowing federal funding of hESC research in late September.

DeGette (now Democratic Chief Deputy Whip, US House of Representatives, 2005-present and Representative, US House of Representatives, 1996-present) received national attention in 2005, when the House of Representatives passed legislation she cosponsored to lift President George W. Bush’s limits on federal funding for embryonic stem cell research. DeGette, who had had been working on the measure since 2001, enlisted the support of Representative Michael N. Castle, (Republican from Delaware), who became DeGette’s principal Republican cosponsor of the legislation. The DeGette-Castle bill passed the Senate on July 18, 2006. President Bush vetoed the bill the next day … his first veto.

“We need to pass legislation in September to fix this problem. ” DeGette  believes there … wasmaybe there is … support by both parties and in the House and Senate to push through legislation … quickly. The resolution to this controversy should/would be to fix, re-word or repeal the Dickey-Wicker ammendment.

Don’t hold your breath …
