Congress Must Resolve Stem Cell Issue, Not Courts
Congress MUST take up the issue of embryonic stem cell research when it reconvenes in September with an urgency to pass legislation.
Obama took the “easy” way with an … executive order; knowing full-well that Congress has passed the Dickey-Wicker language … every year … without revisiting the issues that needed to be resolved in the legislation … after a federal Judge Lamberth’s ruling essentially halted the research. But, the “right wing” is looking to hold up any initiative to cast … any aspersion on his presidency.
The Obama Administration has announced it would appeal the court decision; while Justice Department lawyers are looking to see whether the legislation … as is … addressed by US District Judge Royce Lamberth; violating a federal law that prohibited federal funding from being used to destroy embryos.
The government argument is that research is a process with many steps; Lamberth disagrees. But, what this ruling seems to come down to … is Lamberth defining research as “a systematic investigation,” and saying “you can’t have a piece of research.” So, Lamberth’s not unusual in doing this.
